Moss celebrates closed loop recycling collaboration

Moss, Multipanel UK and Perspex Distribution celebrate ACP closed loop recycling success with first collection achieving 75%

Following the launch of its closed loop scheme in 2024, Moss has celebrated the results of its first collection of Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP) with over six tonnes of plastic and 4.3 tonnes of aluminium recycled. Together with Multipanel UK and Perspex Distribution, the initiative forms part of the strategy to minimise waste and maximise resource use across the three businesses and throughout the supply chain.

Used for signage, displays and exhibition stands, Multipanel UK’s Alupanel ACP offers a lower carbon footprint thanks to its production in Kent. The panels are distributed by Perspex Distribution from Essex, with Moss undertaking all fabrication and printing at its site in St Neots for supply to the customer.

Once at the end of their life, the panels are collected by Moss with all waste trimmed and separated into aluminium and Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) in Birmingham. The aluminium is baled, crushed and sent to a UK aluminium smelter, contributing to the UK’s supply chain. Meanwhile, the LDPE core is ground into small pellets, which are returned to Multipanel UK and formed into a new core.

An initial batch of panels achieved a 75 percent closed-loop recycling rate and they are looking to build on this success in a bid to achieve a 100 percent recycling rate.. Group Account Director Mike Hamling recently spent time at Multipanel’s production site near Dover together with Perspex Distribution.

Hamling commented; “Our visit to Multipanel’s impressive facility has reaffirmed the strong partnership and shared vision between our three businesses. We are delighted to be part of this recycling initiative, offering products with robust green credentials.

“Multipanel UK’s Alupanel ACP sits alongside the rest of our diverse range of eco-friendly materials, giving our customers more choice than ever when it comes to selecting sustainable products and services.”

Gary Weeks from Multipanel UK added; “Last year the LDPE returned from this, and other projects, contributed to the production of 30,000 new panels, highlighting the tangible benefits of our closed-loop approach. This project proves the closed loop recycling concept can work and we will look to grow volumes not only in the UK but into mainland Europe too.”

Luke Martyn, Marketing Manager at Perspex Distribution, said; “We are excited to work with both Moss and Multipanel UK on this important step to a closed loop vision. Moss has been able to see first-hand one of the many advantages of our UK based supply chain while their customers benefit from the knowledge that the Alupanel A-Lite ACP used in their projects will later enjoy a second life.”

The closed loop scheme is just one of Moss UK’s commitments to provide eco-friendly options for clients that not only meet their requirements but also contribute to reducing environmental impact. By collaborating closely across the supply chain, the business ensures that every project contributes to shared sustainability objectives, fostering a greener future for all.

Hamling concluded; “Sustainability is fundamental to all Moss’s global operations and these strong relationships with like-minded suppliers highlight the Group’s dedication to offering sustainable and innovative solutions for our extensive client base.”
